Corpsmen were Navy, but wore Marine uniforms. They were trained to stop bleeding and treat battlefield wounds, but they saw horrible things they were never trained to handle.
The Japs used to yell at us at night to harass us or to find out our positions. They would yell things like “Hey Joe,” and “Marines you die.” If there was any humor about being in this battle, this was as close as it got.
To take the Meat Grinder was to break Japanese defense and communication, but the Meat Grinder was the bitterest and most costly part of the Battle of Iwo Jima.
