Art Print of Gutenberg Press 1440
This print about the birth of printing is adapted from artwork for The Printing Museum in Houston. The image presents the Gutenberg Press, an invention new to the world of 1440, which could quickly print and widely distribute ideas that would fan world events into flame. The strong wooden pillars of the Gutenberg Press frame the bed on which the Gutenberg Bible was born, against a background of antique paper. Beside the press are the words "Gutenberg Press 1440." The capital letters, showing their inheritance from scribal writing, are taken from the illuminated letters which were still hand-drawn in the Gutenberg Bible. The small letters indicative of block type are from letters printed in the Gutenberg Bible in a font still readable today.
See our blog post about the Gutenberg Press to learn about its significance to the entire Second Millennium.
