Iwo Jima, Wednesday, 28 February 1945:
Wednesday was mostly a replay of Tuesday, starting the morning with artillery fire. Again, Battalion 3/25 had to wait for the other battalions during the day. That night, however, most of the Japanese activity targeted 3/25.
By the end of the day, the Japanese still held Hill 382 and Turkey Knob, but the Meat Grinder’s defense was worn down enough for the Marines to move ahead around its strong points, leaving islands of Japanese in a sea of Marines. The hill was outflanked, and the Marines were ready to bypass the Amphitheater and keep pushing east to the coast.
